All forms of SWR meters measure SWR, standing wave ratio on a transmitter feeder. Using SWR meter is relatively easy, but one should be able to interpret the results when using it. In general, VSWR and SWR are the same. When using VSWR meters to measure the the performance of a new antenna, always one should prefer to use up to 3W power and a clear channel. The VSWR meter is connected in the feeder from the transmitter to antenna. For the feeder convenience, SWR meter is located at the transmitter end of the feeder. This helps to monitor the actual VSWR values. One should know, where exactly SWR can be measured. There is always some degree of feeder loss, which has a major effect on the VSWR readings. Feeder loss absorbs power in both directions. When the reflected signal is reduced, there is a high level of feeder loss. The reflected signal gets reduced as a forward signal to the antenna, later it’s reflected back to the transmitter. Since the signal is reduced on its way to the transmitter, an antenna with poor match and high VSWR will be fine at the transmitter. Hence, when a feeder that induces a high loss is used, VSWR is good at the transmitter, but at the antenna, it may be poor.     The standing wave ratio meter, SWR meter, ISWR meter (current "I" SWR), or VSWR meter (voltage SWR) measures the standing wave ratio (SWR) in a transmission line.[a] The meter indirectly measures the degree of mismatch between a transmission line and its load (usually an antenna). Electronics technicians use it to adjust radio transmitters and their antennas and feedlines to be impedance matched so they work together properly, and evaluate the effectiveness of other impedance matching efforts. V.S.W.R / POWER METER Working of Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) Meters The standing wave ratio meter, SWR meter, ISWR meter (current "I" SWR), or VSWR meter (voltage SWR) measures the standing wave ratio (SWR) in a transmission line.[a] The meter indirectly measures the degree of mismatch between a transmission line and its load (usually an antenna). Electronics technicians use it to adjust radio transmitters and their antennas and feedlines to be impedance matched so they work together properly, and evaluate the effectiveness of other impedance matching efforts. The actual impedance of any load is the reactance and resistance together. But, the SWR meter cannot measure both, instead measures the mismatch. To measure the impedance, more complex radio frequency measuring devices must be used. For the SWR meter readings to be accurate, the device must be matched on to the line impedance. Any transmission line will have a certain loss. When this loss occours, the reflected signal will be attenuated when it travels back along the line. Thus, for the SWR meter to be efficient, it must be connected very near to the antenna and further away from the load. The value of SWR will be more when it is nearer to the load. When using a passive type SWR meter it is always better to remove the device from the line. As these devices have diodes and other harmonics producing components, intermodulation may occour.
